Heat Pump Hot Water Service and Repair

You may be thinking that a hot water heat pump would only work in a warmer climate, with warm air to draw energy from. However, the way heat pump systems are designed to operate, is to extract warmth out of the surrounding air. They can do this anywhere down to -10 degrees Celsius, which means they are still a perfect option for those in cold climates.  This is very similar to how solar panels extract heat and energy from the sun for solar hot water systems.

If you want to upgrade your electric hot water system to a heat pump unit, you’ll be pleased to know they share the same connections, so this is an easy job for your local Metropolitan Plumbing professional.

The Benefits of Hot Water Heat Pumps

Heat pump hot water systems are becoming a preferred choice for many homeowners due to their numerous advantages. These include:

  • Energy-efficient: Heat pumps extract heat from the ambient air to warm water, using significantly less electricity than other hot water systems.
  • Cost savings: The efficiency in this form of water heating translates into substantial reductions in running costs over time.
  • Eco-friendly: Reduced electricity consumption in favour of renewable energy means fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
  • No combustion by-products: Unlike gas heaters, there are no harmful carbon emissions.
  • Climate adaptability: They provide consistent hot water in various climates.
  • Long lifespan: They often outlast conventional water heaters, resulting in fewer replacements and less wastage.

Note that the upfront cost of purchasing and installing a heat pump hot water system may be more than an electric or gas water heater. Considering these advantages, however, the heat pump option is both an environmentally responsible and economically sound choice. One that will help you save money and save the planet.

How Heat Pumps Work

Hot water heat pumps use the warmth from the ambient air, and electricity to pump a refrigerant through a heat exchanger in order to heat water. The refrigerant used for heating water boils at low temperatures (around -26oC), allowing a heat pump to work at ambient temperatures as low as -10oC!

Heat pumps heat your water in several steps:

  1. A liquid refrigerant passes through an evaporator where it becomes a gas. This gas picks up heat from the air.
  2. An electric compressor is used to compress the gas refrigerant, causing it to increase in temperature even more. It is now hotter than the water in the tank.
  3. This hot gas flows to a condenser and passes its heat onto the water in the tank, turning back into a liquid as it cools down.
  4. The liquid refrigerant then flows into an expansion valve where it cools, ready to be used again.

While electricity is used to power the fan, compressor and other components of a heat pump hot water system, they are approximately three times more efficient than electric water heaters with conventional elements. The warmer the outside air temperature, the easier it is for the heat pump to warm your water.

FAQ – We Answer All Your Heat Pump Questions

Want to learn more about heat pump hot water systems? We've got all you need to know about it here.

Whether it’s for your pool or just general hot water use, knowing how long it takes for your heat pump hot water system to heat your water can be useful. There is an array of factors that contribute to how long your heat pump unit will take to heat your water:
  • Water temperature
  • Ambient temperature
  • Humidity
  • Wind
  • Insulation
Modern heat pump water heaters have settings that can be useful in swapping between energy-saving settings and high-demand. In a high-demand mode, your heat pump hot water system can be fully heated in 60-80 minutes. Energy-saving modes increase this time to 2-3 hours.
From the fan which sucks air into the heat pump, to the heat pump compressor which creates additional heat to warm your water, older heat pumps can be quite noisy. This is especially true if it has been installed near a bedroom where you need quiet. Modern day heat pump hot water systems, however, are only slightly louder than a whisper. Despite this, poorly placed older heat pumps have given this hot water system type a bad rap, and many people shy away from them because of this. If noise is still a worry, consider having your heat pump installed away from living rooms and bedroom windows to avoid noise being a concern altogether.
When looking at what size heat pump hot water system is best suited for your home, there are a few things you should consider:
  • How many people are in your home?
  • How much hot water do you use in a day?
  • What time of day do you use hot water?
  • Do multiple people use hot water at the same time of day?
  • Are there water-saving fixtures installed?
  • Does your dishwasher or washing machine use hot water?
Given that the average Australian uses approximately 75L of hot water per day, a family of four will most likely find that a 270-315L tank is suitable for their home. Depending on how many water and energy-saving measures your home employs, your storage tank could be reduced by as much as half of this!
